Profile

Peter Brown is the co-CEO of Renaissance Technologies, the most profitable quantitative hedge fund in history. Renaissance's flagship Medallion Fund has generated average annual returns of approximately 66% before fees (39% after fees) since 1988 — widely considered the greatest track record in financial history.

Brown joined Renaissance in 1993 after a career in computational linguistics at IBM Research. He became co-CEO alongside Robert Mercer in 2010, succeeding the firm's legendary founder, mathematician James Simons (who passed away in May 2024). Brown holds a PhD in mathematics and computer science.

The Medallion Fund has been closed to outside investors since 1993 and is available only to Renaissance employees and their families. The firm also manages several other funds open to outside investors (RIEF, RIDA, RIDGE), which have produced more modest returns. Renaissance manages approximately $55 billion total. Brown is notably private, rarely giving public interviews.
