SEC 13F filings, documented in "The Big Short" by Michael Lewis
Michael James Burry is the founder of Scion Asset Management and one of the most famous investors of the 21st century, primarily due to his prescient bet against the U.S. subprime mortgage market in 2007-2008, which was immortalised in Michael Lewis's book "The Big Short" and the subsequent Academy Award-winning film, in which he was portrayed by Christian Bale.
Burry is a trained physician who attended UCLA and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. While completing his medical residency, he began investing and posting stock analysis on internet forums, attracting investor attention. He founded Scion Capital in 2000.
After closing Scion in 2008 following the subprime triumph, Burry relaunched as Scion Asset Management in 2013. His recent investing has been characterised by concentrated, often contrarian positions and high-profile short bets, including positions against Tesla and ARK Innovation ETF. He is known for his unconventional communication style and periodic deletion of his social media accounts. He manages approximately $250 million.
