Profile

George Soros is the founder of Soros Fund Management and widely considered the most famous hedge fund manager in history. His Quantum Fund generated average annual returns of approximately 30% over 30 years, one of the greatest track records in investment history.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1930, Soros survived the Nazi occupation as a teenager before emigrating to England, where he studied at the London School of Economics under philosopher Karl Popper. He moved to the United States in 1956 and eventually founded the Quantum Fund in 1973.

Soros is best known for "breaking the Bank of England" in 1992, when his $10 billion short position against the British pound forced the UK out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, netting approximately $1.5 billion in profit. Now 95, Soros has largely retired from active trading and focuses on his Open Society Foundations, to which he has donated over $32 billion. Soros Fund Management now operates as a family office managing approximately $25 billion.
