GLOBAL TRADER RANKINGS / RECORD COMPARISON

Gross Versus Net Trading Performance

Expenses, share classes and why a flat fee haircut does not reconstruct an investor return.

Identify what has already been deducted

A gross figure may exclude some charges but include others. A net figure may refer to one fee schedule or investor class rather than every subscriber. Ask for the report's explicit definition instead of assigning a universal meaning to the label. Record transaction costs, financing, management charges and performance allocations as separate fields where the source supplies them.

An invented gross twelve percent portfolio result and a net ten percent account result cannot establish a two-percentage-point management advantage. They describe different charge boundaries. The missing bridge could include fee timing, cash balances or a changed investment object. Keep the unknown components visible rather than renaming the gross observation net.

Timing can make a fixed subtraction wrong

Fees may be assessed periodically on a changing asset base or depend on hurdle and high-water-mark provisions. A single annual percentage deducted from cumulative return does not generally reproduce that path. Even a mechanically correct subtraction should be labelled as an invented sensitivity, not a reconstructed fee-net result.

For a simple invented one-period illustration, a growth factor of one point ten followed by a one percent charge on ending value produces one point zero eight nine. The resulting gain is eight point nine percent. Subtracting one percentage point from ten produces nine percent instead. The small difference demonstrates a convention boundary; it is not an estimate of a real manager's charges.

Separate subscription cost from portfolio cost

A newsletter subscription is an expense paid by a customer, not necessarily a charge deducted from the model's return series. The economic effect depends on capital, holding period and whether the subscriber follows any trades. A product price alone cannot turn raw signal percentages into an investor account return.

Similarly, an account commission schedule does not establish actual turnover or slippage. To evaluate realised costs, preserve execution quantities and times under the measured account definition. Do not infer subscriber profits from a provider's headline sum and a monthly price. A comparison should explain the unavailable account bridge rather than creating one from assumptions.

Compare compatible investor classes

A fund can publish classes with different expense terms, currencies or inception dates. Retain the class identifier next to every observation. Switching classes to obtain the longest history creates a joined record that needs explicit justification. A portfolio's common manager does not make every class's net series identical.

When only a gross composite is available, a qualitative profile may still explain its investment scope. A ranking against after-fee retail accounts is a different question requiring additional records. GIPS materials describe formal reporting requirements and verification scope; this educational page makes no compliance or verification claim for any named firm.

State the conclusion before publishing the percentage

Write the cost label as part of the numerical claim so it survives extraction into a search answer. Include the observation interval and measured object. If the cost boundary remains unclear, say so directly and withhold an ordering that relies on that distinction.

Use sensitivity calculations only as sensitivities. Identify their invented fee rule, show the formula and keep them away from real-person performance tables. A comparison is stronger when its unknown expense fields are explicit. Unsupported precision is not extra depth, and an honest cost-definition discussion can be more useful than another decimal in a composite score.

Apply the distinction

Use the complete authored packet to inspect how this issue changes the permissible comparison. Record unresolved inputs rather than replacing them with a made-up number. Keep an original source reference beside each factual observation, and state when the calculation is illustrative rather than based on an actual account.
