GLOBAL TRADER RANKINGS / RECORD COMPARISON

Comparing Trader Returns Over the Same Period

Calendar alignment, partial histories and annualised equivalents without invented observations.

Freeze the question before aligning records

A comparison needs an explicit interval before the headline returns are inspected. Decide whether the question concerns a calendar year, a rolling period or an event-specific window. A source whose coverage does not span that interval is incomplete for that question. It may still support a different description, but it cannot be promoted by filling missing dates with an assumed flat return.

Suppose invented Account Alder reports a full calendar year and Account Elm begins halfway through it. Both observations can be accurately transcribed. They do not answer a full-year side-by-side question. The worksheet should show Elm's absent early period as unknown. Adding a note that markets were quiet does not supply its unobserved account history.

Distinguish duration from synchronisation

Two records can each cover twelve months while experiencing different market conditions. Equal duration is not a common interval. Store exact start and end dates separately from a rounded months label. A month-based calculator is an educational pace transformation; it does not prove that the source dates actually align or that twelve approximated months match a measured year.

Reporting frequency is another boundary. Monthly observations can omit an intramonth loss visible in daily equity. A daily account and a monthly fund report can share start and end dates yet supply different risk resolution. Keep the frequency distinction visible when interpreting drawdown or volatility rather than inferring a smoother economic path.

What annualisation computes

For a stated total return R over m months, the annualised equivalent is (1 + R / 100) raised to the power 12 / m, minus one, then expressed as a percentage. This repeats an observed compounding pace mathematically. It does not observe the unrecorded remainder of a year. A negative return above total loss is permitted; a gain of minus one hundred percent has no positive growth factor for this formula.

An invented fifty percent gain over eighteen months gives an annualised equivalent of about thirty-one percent. The same gain over six months gives one hundred twenty-five percent. Neither transformation measures the following six or twelve months. Short windows can produce spectacular extrapolations without supplying a long-term record. Never label the transformed number as a realised annual return.

Do not annualise away missingness

A missing year cannot be replaced by the annualised equivalent of the best quarter. An intermittent publication sequence may have gaps, backfilled observations or a changed account. Retain each gap and the reason it is unresolved. If consecutive subperiod returns are available under one definition, compounding can join them; overlapping intervals cannot be chained as if they were independent segments.

For invented quarterly returns of ten percent followed by minus ten percent, the combined change is minus one percent, not zero. The growth factors multiply. This arithmetic still assumes compatible observations and does not correct undocumented flows or fees. The worksheet should separate a formula check from the evidence admission decision.

Describe the surviving comparison

A defensible publication can say that two documented records share an interval while noting differences in cost and account scope. It can also state that a common-period numerical ordering is unavailable. Both descriptions are clearer than sorting annualised numbers and calling the result a worldwide skill ranking.

Retain the original observation, its publication date and the date the comparison was prepared. A document revised in October may still describe performance ending in June. Last-modified metadata is not a performance cutoff. Before publishing, verify that feeds, tables and structured descriptions retain the same period labels as the visible article.

Apply the distinction

Use the complete authored packet to inspect how this issue changes the permissible comparison. Record unresolved inputs rather than replacing them with a made-up number. Keep an original source reference beside each factual observation, and state when the calculation is illustrative rather than based on an actual account.
