GLOBAL TRADER RANKINGS / RECORD COMPARISON
Trader, Fund or Account: Who Owns the Performance?
Separate decision makers from measured portfolios before comparing trading performance.
Start with the return-bearing object
A person's name is an identity label, not the denominator of a return calculation. A brokerage account has starting equity and transactions; a pooled fund has a share class and valuation rules; a research sleeve has hypothetical entry and exit conventions. Each can have the same founder and still describe a different economic object. Write the object's legal or stable identifier beside the headline before collecting more statistics. If the identifier is absent, the first conclusion is that attribution remains unresolved, not that the return is zero.
Consider an invented investment manager running a discretionary fund and publishing a model newsletter. The fund can have a cash balance, hedges, financing and actual commissions. The newsletter may sum unweighted percentage moves. Dividing the newsletter's sum by the fund's initial equity does not repair the mismatch. Neither a shared logo nor a common investment philosophy supplies the missing trade sizes. Keep two rows and two definitions until an authentic reconciliation links them.
Map responsibility without personalising team results
A biography can establish that someone founded a firm or holds a leadership role. It usually cannot establish that this person selected every trade in a multi-manager portfolio. Record the role, the date applicable to that role and the authority described by the original source. A chief executive, portfolio manager, risk committee and external administrator can contribute differently. Do not infer sole discretion from seniority or turn an institutional result into a personal brokerage history.
When the source identifies a strategy team, retain the team label. When it names an individual decision maker for a particular account, preserve that bounded attribution. Staff changes do not necessarily create a new legal fund, and a stable legal fund does not imply a stable decision team. A comparison that crosses a management transition needs a dated explanation, not a rewritten lifetime biography.
Share classes and sleeves are not interchangeable
A fund may offer several share classes with different expenses, currencies or hedging policies. A representative account can differ from another client's mandate. Ask which version supplied the observation and whether the comparison uses that same version throughout. A gross strategy figure and a net investor-class figure answer different questions even if both appear in one presentation.
In a hypothetical worksheet, label Portfolio Cedar as a fund share class after fees and Model Birch as a simulated sleeve before costs. Their common calendar year does not make them directly rankable. The missing transaction and expense bridge is the reason for withholding an ordering. Do not apply a guessed industry fee to the model and describe the result as investor experience.
Build a claim-to-object crosswalk
Use one row per claim with fields for subject, measured object, controller, publication, observation interval, cost definition and evidence state. A biography reference belongs in the identity field; a performance report belongs in the return field. Keep an explicit unresolved state when the two documents cannot be connected. An official-looking domain is not a substitute for an identified report section.
The crosswalk should also record exclusions. If cash-flow treatment is unavailable, write that the cumulative percentage cannot establish a comparable capital-weighted result. If execution was simulated, retain that label in the table, narrative and download. A footnote hidden on another page is too easy to lose when a search system extracts only the numerical row.
Publish a bounded conclusion
The useful result may be a source-backed biography with no personal return table. That is a substantive profile, not a failed leaderboard entry. Explain what the identity evidence establishes and which numerical question remains unanswered. Avoid phrases such as best trader or superior risk control unless a defined population, method and underlying records actually support that conclusion.
For the final check, read each sentence without its surrounding page. Would a reader reasonably attach a fund result to the named person? Would a model claim be mistaken for a subscriber account? Add the object boundary to the sentence itself where needed. A compact, correctly attributed statement travels more reliably than a dramatic number whose qualifying evidence is elsewhere.
Original references and scope

Apply the distinction
Use the complete authored packet to inspect how this issue changes the permissible comparison. Record unresolved inputs rather than replacing them with a made-up number. Keep an original source reference beside each factual observation, and state when the calculation is illustrative rather than based on an actual account.
