Steven A. Cohen is the founder and CEO of Point72 Asset Management, a multi-strategy hedge fund managing approximately $35.2 billion. Previously, he founded SAC Capital Advisors, one of the most successful and controversial hedge funds in history, which generated average annual returns of approximately 30% from 1992 to 2013.
Cohen grew up in Great Neck, New York, and developed a passion for poker and trading at a young age. He graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1978 and began his career as a junior trader at Gruntal & Co., reportedly making $8,000 profit on his first day.
SAC Capital was forced to close in 2013 after pleading guilty to insider trading charges, paying $1.8 billion in fines β though Cohen himself was never criminally charged. He launched Point72 in 2014 as a family office, reopening to outside capital in 2018. Cohen also owns the New York Mets baseball team, which he purchased for $2.4 billion in 2020. His net worth is estimated at approximately $21 billion.
