David Elliot Shaw is the founder of D.E. Shaw & Co., a pioneering quantitative hedge fund that helped establish the modern era of systematic trading. The firm manages approximately $60 billion in assets and is one of the largest and most profitable hedge funds in the world.
Shaw earned a PhD in computer science from Stanford University and worked as a faculty member at Columbia University before founding D.E. Shaw in 1988. He is widely regarded as one of the fathers of quantitative finance, having built algorithms that could identify and exploit market inefficiencies before most competitors even understood the concept.
D.E. Shaw has generated over $37 billion in net gains since inception. The firm was ranked #1 on the LCH Investments Top 20 Hedge Fund list in 2024. Shaw stepped back from day-to-day management in 2001 to focus on computational biochemistry research through D.E. Shaw Research, where he has made significant contributions to molecular dynamics simulation. Jeff Bezos notably worked at D.E. Shaw before founding Amazon.
